DCNR released statewide fall foliage reports for week 3. Here is an overview.
Statewide Fall Foliage Overview
The pattern of chilly nights has continued, coaxing many forest canopies comprising Penn’s Woods to a brilliant
crescendo. Vivid fall color is now widespread throughout the Commonwealth.
Awesome autumn hues can be found from the Poconos to the central and southern Appalachians west through the Allegheny Plateau.
Fall foliage enthusiasts can expect impressive color just about anywhere in the Keystone State throughout the forecast period.
The Clearfield County (Moshannon State Forest District) service forester reported best color in the region but added that most color is expected to fade toward the latter half of the forecast period. Golden birch and beech, maples (orange and red), and sassafras (yellow) are still at peak. Oaks have progressed fast and although some are still green, most red oaks are showing muted yellow, and white oaks are crimson.
A drive on Caledonia Pike East, Lost Run Road, and Quehanna Highway will show excellent color. The contrast between green oaks and other hardwoods is beautiful.
Hike the Frenchville Trail off Caledonia Pike for a view into the West Branch Susquehanna River valley to the south. Be sure to stop at the Gifford Run Vista on Lost Run Road.
