The PA Organization for Watersheds and Rivers (POWR) is again partnering with DCNR to accept nominations for the 2024 River of the Year recognition.  Nominations are due November 10.

Pennsylvania’s River of the Year is an honor designed to elevate public awareness of specific waterways and recognize important conservation needs and achievements.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations with tax-exempt status 501(c)(3), municipalities, counties, and educational institutions. From the nominations submitted, up to five waterways are selected to go up for public vote.

“Each year the River of the Year competition highlights one of Pennsylvania’s special waterways, and I am excited to announce that we are again partnering with the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers to accept nominations for the 2024 competition,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “Outdoor recreation continues to grow in the Commonwealth and that growth is a direct result of conscious effort to showcase the tremendous natural assets like our beautiful rivers and waterways. I look forward to this year’s competition and can’t wait to see what the public selects as the 2024 Pennsylvania River of the Year.”

“POWR is excited to announce the opening of the nomination period once again for the 2024 Pennsylvania River of the Year. River of the Year is a highly anticipated program that highlights the Commonwealth’s waterways, said POWR representative, Janet Sweeney. We look forward to another chance for all Pennsylvanians to support their favorite waterway in friendly competition with others across the Commonwealth.”

After a waterway is chosen for the annual honor, local groups implement a year-round slate of activities and events to celebrate the waterway, including a paddling trip, or sojourn. The organization nominating the winning river will receive a $10,000 leadership grant from DCNR to help fund the River of the Year activities.
