Clearfield Borough Discusses Amusement Tax, Police Incidents and Park Rules

Clearfield- Assistant Chief Julie Curry with the Clearfield Regional Police reported that there were 845 total incidents for the month of July, that included but were not limited to traffic stops, citations, DUIs and drug arrests.

Curry also reported that an officer did have a minor accident this week. While on the job, Officer Desmett sprained his ankle while running down a suspect. The subject first gave chase when they were pulled over then ended up driving away and causing a minor accident and fled on foot.

Assistant Chief Curry wanted Borough Council to know that all law enforcement entities involved did a great job, especially the Clearfield Regional Police Department that day for working together.

In other business, two fuel bids were opened: one from JJ Powell whose bid was $3.399 for pre-purchase, $3.499 for fixed and $3.55 for variable. Nittany Oil’s bid was $3.949 for pre-purchase, $3.99 for fixed and $3.432 for variable.

The Borough Council made a motion and approved to go with JJ Powell.

Underneath Public Safety there was a motion that was made and approved for an addendum to the park rules at Lower Whitmer Park. There were reports this week of some transients living and sleeping around the area of the gazebo in Lower Whitmer Park. This addendum would make rules such as no camping in the park more clear and precise.

The resignation of Code Enforcement Officer Andrea Stewart was accepted by Borough Council. Council also motioned and approved to advertise the job as well as keep Andrea Stewart on for a reduced number of hours a week until a replacement is hired.

Mayor Mason Strouse did make a note that soon Borough residents will be able to make code complaints through the Borough’s website instead of calling the Code Enforcement Office. In the long run, this will make it a little easier to expedite Code complaints as soon as possible.

Council members also discussed and voted on the fee schedule for the amusement tax.  A motion was made and approved to accept the fee schedule as follows: $100 for jukeboxes, $100 for pool tables and $200 for mechanical devices such as pinball machines and PA Skill machines as well.

Borough Council Vice President Steve Livergood was the only member to oppose the motion citing that the Council should wait to vote on the fee schedule until the STAMP Report is in from the state.
