NJ Man Taken into Custody Following Police Pursuit in Stolen Vehicle

CLEARFIELD – A New Jersey man was taken into custody after a police pursuit, and then subsequently trying to flee on foot Aug. 16.

Tariq A. Frye, 19, of East Orange, N.J., was charged by Clearfield Regional police with felony fleeing or attempting to elude an officer and receiving stolen property; misdemeanor evading arrest or detention on foot; and eight summaries.

According to a department-issued news release, officers attempted to stop the operator of a white Honda HRV for failure to stop at the intersection of New and Merrill streets, Clearfield. The vehicle was later confirmed as stolen.

When police fully activated their emergency lights and sirens, the operator accelerated and turned onto West Front Street/U.S. Route 322.

Following a search of the area, the suspect vehicle was located traveling west and police again activated their lights and sirens.

As officers pursued the vehicle, speeds allegedly exceeded 90 miles per hour and the operator attempted to enter Interstate 80 at Exit 111.

But police say he was unable to negotiate the turn due to his speed and struck the guiderails, which disabled the vehicle.

He fled the crash scene on foot into a wooded area, and further search required assistance from several other agencies.

Assisting were state police from Clearfield and DuBois, PSP Aviation, state Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, PSP and DuBois City K9 Units and Sandy Township police.

The operator, identified as Frye, was located at S.B. Elliott State Park, and apprehended by police without further incident.

Online court documents indicate that Frye is currently scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Aug. 23 during centralized court. Bail is set at $100,000 monetary.
