PENFIELD – Several programs have been planned for July 21 – 24 at Parker Dam State Park.
Friday, July 21
Night Eyes guided night hike
8:30 p.m.—Campground Amphitheater
After a quick talk on why eyes shine and how we see at night, join us for a short hike along a section of the Stumpfield trail to see if we can view nocturnal wildlife and explore some of the adaptations that allow animals to be out at night.
Saturday, July 22
Ferns of the Beaver Dam Trail
9 a.m.—meet in front of park office
How many different species of ferns can be found along the Beaver Dam Trail? More than you might think. Enjoy this guided 2.5-mile hike learning to identify our ferns.
From Spark to Smoke:
Beginner Flint and Steel Fire Making
4:30 p.m.—Above Beach House
Come join us and learn how flint and steel is used to build fires. Along with getting a spark, learn how to use and make char cloth and gather natural materials for fire building.
Moth Watch
8:45 p.m.—Pavilion 6
Join us for a moth watch to kick off National Moth Week. Learn what species are around and how to join in the fun as a citizen scientist.
Sunday, July 23
Tea & Talk
7 p.m.—Beach House Steps
Bring your own cup to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park. Talk is, as always, whatever you want to talk about concerning the park. Come prepared with a topic or three.

Monday, July 24
Coffee & Birds
9 a.m.—Beach House
Bring your own cup to enjoy some bird-friendly coffee (Chesapeake Coffee Roasters Bird Friendly Hellbender Blend), and then take a guided walk looking for our local birds.
