Lady Tide Down Lady Comets 9-1

Story by Rusty McCracken

CLYMER – The Curwensville Softball Team picked up its third straight win on Thursday with a 9-1 victory over Penns Manor in non-league action. The Lady Tide (4-1) plated nine runs while collecting just five hits and taking advantage of five Comet errors to earn the win. Freshman Pitcher Addison Siple had another solid performance in the circle with 13 strikeouts and walking one batter while allowing just one earned run in the contest. Siple has struck out at least 13 batters in each of her five outings this season.

The visitors scored one run in each of the first four frames to hold a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning. Sophomore Natalie Wischuck led off the contest with a full-count walk. On a sacrifice by catcher Addison Butler, Wischuck moved up two bases. Shyanne Rudy drove in the first run with an infield single.

An unearned run came across in the second, started again by a walk. Freshman Addison Warren accepted the free pass this time and moved to second when Ava Olosky’s sacrifice was bobbled. The run came as Comet pitcher Allison Rhea threw a wild pitch that allowed Warren to score from second.

Rudy singled to put a runner on with one out in the third. Teagan Harzinski then walked and gave way to pinch-runner Jenna McCartney before Siple also walked to load the bases. After the second out, Olosky picked up the RBI on another free pass for a 3-0 lead.

The Tide continued to distance the score in the fourth on the miscues of their hosts. Wischuck reached on an error and scampered to third on a groundout off the bat of Butler. She was able to score on yet another wild pitch by Rhea for the 4-0 mark.

The Tide bats did account for a few runs in the top of the sixth after Olosky reached base on an error. Ava Hainsey folloed with a single to center to put runners on the corners. After the first out, Wischuck also singled to center and all three runners scored on a throwing error for a 7-0 lead. Butler singled and Rudy walked before three additional wild pitches brought the final two runs in for Curwensville.

“I thought our small-ball game was pretty good,” said Tide coach Allen Leigey, “and we ran the bases well and took advantage of some situations. We just have to find a way to put some hits together. We will play better teams next week, and if we don’t hit the ball better, it will be tough to win.”

The Comets (0-6) did score a run in the bottom of the seventh. With one out Sidnee Hrubochack drew a walk. Sarah Stiteler followed with a single to put runners on the corners. When Stiteler tried to steal second, Butler cut her down at second which allowed the runner to score. Siple struck out the next batter to preserve the 9-1 win.

Curwensville will get back into ICC-north action on Tuesday when they travel to West Branch for a 4:30 game.
