PITTSBURGH — Two Clearfield wrestlers placed in the top-8 in their respective weight classes this past weekend at the PJW State Championships held at the Peterson Events Center.
Sonny Diehl, competing in the 11-12 year old 125 pound weight class, won the state championship. By defeating Sophia Wise of Reynolds by the score of 13-3 in the final, Sonny became the first girl in school history to win a state championship in wrestling.
Matthew Rowles, competing in the 11-12year old 80 pound weight class, placed fifth. Matthew lost his first match of the weekend then rattled off five straight wins before losing again in the consolation semis. He then won his fifth place bout by fall.
