HERSHEY — Curwensville Golden Tide senior Jacob Carfley went 1-1 and survived the first day of wrestling at the PIAA AA State Wrestling Championships in Hershey on Thursday.
Carfley (25-8), the third place finisher out of the Northwest Region, was down 5-0 in the second period when he was pinned by the Southwest Region runner-up, Lucas Fye (31-8) of Bald Eagle Area.
With his season, and career, on the line, Carfley defeated Chestnut Ridge’s Bryce Holderbaum (26-11) by a score of 3-2. After a scoreless first period, Carfley escaped about halfway through the second to go up 1-0. Holderbaum took a 2-1 lead on a takedown with 33 seconds left in the period, but a late reversal gave Carfley the 3-2 lead. Carfley rode out the entire third to claim the 3-2 win and move on to Friday morning’s consolation round two. He will face Mifflinburg’s Brady Struble, a senior with a 32-9 record.
Action gets back underway for AA at 9:00 AM on Friday.
Leading the team race after the first day is Notre Dame – Green Pond with 41.5 points. District 9’s Brookville sits in fourth with 20.5 points and three quarterfinalists.
Area wrestlers still in the quarterfinals are West Branch’s Landon Bainey (38-1) at 113, and Glendale wrestlers Zeke Dubler (36-3) at 160 and Suds Dubler (37-3) at 172.
