Bison Crown Four District Champs; Send Eleven to Regionals

Report by Hank Wilson

HYDE — Clearfield Area High School and the Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium hosted the District 4/9 AAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday, and the Bison wrestlers enjoyed a successful day.  The Bison crowned four individual champions, and advanced eleven wrestlers to next weekend’s Northwest AAA regionals in Altoona.

Winning titles for Clearfield were Brady Collins at 126, Nolan Barr at 138, Carter Chamberlain at 189 and Hayden Kovalick at 215.

Evan Davis at 113,  Mark McGonigal at 172, and Oliver Billotte at 285 were runners up at their weight classes.

Third place winners for the Bison were Xavier Lutz at 106, Adam Rougeaux, 120, and Karson Kline at 152.

Ty Aveni finished fourth at 132.

Brady Collins – 126 champion

Collins (30-3), the number one seed, recorded two pins on his way to the title, decking Shikellemy’s Gabby Brodigan in the semifinals, and flattening Williamsport’s Devin Harris (12-14)in the finals.

Barr (22-12), also a number one seed, needed three wins on the day to pick up his championship medal. He pinned David Kunselman (4-16) of Punxsutawney in the quarterfinals, then earned a tough 5-2 decision over Shikellemy’s Charles Keener (27-14) in the semis.  His finals opponent, returning champion David Aughenbaugh of DuBois, was unable to wrestle the final, so Barr received a medical forfeit victory.

Nolan Barr – 138 Champion

Chamberlain (26-7), the number two seed at 189, pinned his way to the finals where he then tangled with top seeded Sebastian Robinson (30-14) of Williamsport. Leading 5-0 in the third period, Chamberlain held off a solid rally by Robinson, winning 6-4 for his championship.

Carter Chamberlain – 189 Champion

At 215 pounds, top seeded Hayden Kovalick (30-2) pinned Williamsport’s Charlie Lundy (4-16) in the semifinals, then like his teammate Barr, received a medical forfeit victory when Steven Miller of Selingsgrove could not wrestle in the championship final.

Hayden Kovalick – 215 Champion

Evan Davis (25-9) made it to the finals at 113 with a pin of Shikellemy’s Alex Reed (27-10) in the semis, but ran into returning district champ Cael Nasdeo (27-3) of Williamsport, who won by technical fall.

McGonigal (26-8) decked Williamsport’s Ryan Dunlap (3-22) in the quarterfinals, then decisioned Ethan Miller (22-11) of Selingsgrove in the semis.  He couldn’t solve top seeded Waylon Wehler (29-2) of St. Marys, dropping a 7-2 decision to the returning champ in the finals.

Billotte (26-2) picked up his 100th career victory with a first period fall of Zach Gallagher (26-10) from DuBois in the semifinals. He was  then looking to avenge his only loss of the season in the finals where he faced Williamsport’s Charles Crews (34-6) , who defeated Oliver in the District Team Duals a few weeks prior. The two big boys staged another epic battle, with Crews scoring a late third period takedown, then fending off Billotte’s frantic escape attempt as time ran out to win 4-3.

At 106, Xavier Lutz (8-10)  was pinned in the semifinals by eventual champ Aiden Beimel (24-3) of St. Marys, but came back to record a technical fall over Aubree Donahue (9-13) of DuBois to earn his bronze medal.

Rougeaux (13-13) took a similar path to his third place finish at 120, losing by fall in the semis to eventual champ Luke Seagraves (15-19) of Williamsport, then beating Bradford’s Devin Poe (22-11) in the consolation final.

In what most considered the toughest weight class in the tournament, Kline (19-12) wrestled four matches on the day to pick up his third place finish.  He decisioned Punxsy’s Brady Smith (15-7) by a score of 12-9 in the quarterfinals, then lost by fall to eventual champ Carter Weaver (27-12)of Williamsport in the semis. He bounced back with a 6-2 victory over Shikellemy’s Caleb Yoder (22-13) , then beat Lane Dellaquilla (23-5) of St. Marys, 4-2 to earn third place.

At 132, Ty Aveni (13-10) finished fourth to earn a trip to next week’s regionals.

Seniors Luke Freeland (18-14), who finished his career with 66 wins in a Bison uniform, at 145 and Wyatt Reorda (5-10) at 160 also competed for the Bison.
