CLEARFIELD – Residents of Clearfield County are once again invited to participate in local Hoodie Hoo Day festivities on Sunday, Feb. 20.

It’s a little-known holiday to make a whole lot of noise to bring Hoodie Hoo out of the forest to chase off winter, according to Jane Lee Yare, event organizer.

The morning of Feb. 20, Yare will make her rounds to Express Café and Spanky’s Courthouse Café, both of downtown Clearfield, with hopes patrons will help wake up Hoodie Hoo.

“Normally, it involves shooting the groundhog or feeding him (plastic) carrots. Most times, we shoot the groundhog, but I don’t know what we’ll do this year because he stayed underground.

“I guess you shoot the groundhog if you don’t like him, or give him carrots so he’ll come out. Hoodie Hoo is completely different though. You call for him to come out so he chases winter away.”

Because Hoodie Hoo Day falls on Sunday, Yare says once church services have concluded, she’d like people to toot their car horns at 1 p.m. and shout: “come out, Hoodie Hoo!”

“Do it all over Clearfield and maybe this will get rid of winter. It’s been ugly and brutal this year, and I’m trying to do you a favor – maybe it’ll work, maybe it won’t.”

Yare has organized events locally for over 10 years and swears she’s didn’t make up this holiday herself. She encourages people to look up National Hoodie Hoo Day online.
