Golden Tide Fourth Quarter Comeback Attempt Falls Short in Loss to Moshannon Valley

HOUTZDALE – Moshannon Valley (2-11) was able to avenge a loss earlier in the season to Curwensville (3-12) in boys basketball action Tuesday night as the Black Knights were able to defeat the Golden Tide by a final score of 48-45.

The outcome makes it a season split for the two programs as despite a terrific fourth quarter comeback attempt from the Golden Tide, the Knights were able to do just enough to hang on in a narrow three-point victory.

Moshannon Valley was able to control the lead from the opening quarter as Micheal Kitko sunk 10 of his game-high 22 points in the opening period to get the Knights out to a 16-6 advatage after one period.

The home team however couldn’t build upon the lead in the second quarter as Danny McGarry scored six of his 14 for the game in the second to help lead the Golden Tide offense for the period.

For Moshannon Valley, Kitko showed his range by nailing three trey balls in the second quarter, while Samuel Howard chipped in with eight points of his own in the first half to help the home team cling to a narrow 27-21 lead at the break.

Curwensville in the first half was paced by Parker Wood who led the Golden Tide in the scoring column for the game with 15 points, including eight in the first two quarters.

The third quarter saw Moshannon Valley extend their lead to double-digits as Chase Shoemaker added four of his five points for the game in the third quarter for the Black Knights to help them extend the advantage to 40-28.

In the fourth quarter, things got intense as Curwensville was able to end the game on a 17-8 run, as Ty Terry scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter to help lead a solid comeback attempt for the Golden Tide. Unfortunately, it was not quite enough as the Knights were able to escape with the narrow 48-45 victory.

Joining Wood, Terry, and McGarry in the scoring column for the Golden Tide were Ayden Sutika and Davis Fleming who each chipped in two points to round out the scoring for Curwensville.

Joining Howard, Kitko, and Shoemaker for the Knights in the scoring column were Landyn Evans and James Hummel with two points each, as well as Kadin Hansel who hit a free throw in the fourth quarter to help keep the Knights in front.

The Golden Tide will look for a quick rebound as they hit the road for Westover to face Harmony Wednesday night, January 26. The junior-varsity game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. with the varsity game tip slated for 7:30 p.m.
