Karthaus Man Allegedly Involved in Police Stand-off Killed in Traffic Accident

COVINGTON TOWNSHIP – A Karthaus man involved in a police stand-off in December of 2020 where he allegedly shot at state troopers, was one of two men killed in a traffic accident last week.

According to his obituary, Shannon D. Quick, 47, and his father, George Quick, 68, were killed in the accident in Covington Township on Friday, Jan. 7.

A state police report states that George Quick was the driver when his vehicle rear-ended a propane truck that was stopped with its four-way flashers on, as it was preparing to make a delivery on the Frenchville Karthaus Highway at 1:11 p.m.

The driver of the propane truck suffered minor injuries.

Police say the crash is still under investigation.

Shannon Quick was out on bail on criminal attempt/homicide charges stemming from an incident on Christmas Eve in 2020.

According to the affidavit, police were called to Quick’s residence by his mother who said he was threatening to hit and shoot her. She told investigators she hadn’t slept for four days for fear he would hurt or kill her.

Around 10:26 p.m., a state police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) responded to the residence on Potter Street to arrest him.

Over a public address system, they identified themselves to him as state troopers several times. At this point, Quick was also on the phone with negotiators when he made several statements that he was going to kill the officers.

After police fired a bean bag into the residence, Quick allegedly shot a round at the SERT members, which struck the ground in front of them.

They utilized a tactical vehicle to rip into the home, destroying it, according to media reports. After this, they were able to take Quick into custody.

Court records indicate his attorney filed a notice of insanity or mental infirmity defense in September of 2021.

Quick signed a plea agreement in December of 2021 on terroristic threats, assault and harassment charges related to the threats to his mother and was released on $25,000 unsecured bail.

His bail in the attempted homicide case was also lowered to $25,000 unsecured, and he was released Dec. 3. This case was still pending at the time of his death.

Arrangements for both Shannon and George Quick are being handled by the Heath Funeral Home & Cremations Service LLC in Osceola Mills.

Memorial contributions can be made to the funeral home at P.O. Box 157, Osceola Mills, PA 16666.
