HOUTZDALE — The Curwensville Golden Tide wrestling team made it a successful return from Christmas break with a 36-22 win over the Moshannon Valley Black Knights on Thursday night.
After the teams traded forfeits at 106 and 113 and with no match at 120, the Tide went on to win six of the 10 contested bouts, picking up four fall which proved to be the difference in the match.
Damian Brady kept his undefeated season (9-0) intact at 106 for the Tide to start things off.
However, Tide senior Jake Carfley was handed his first loss of the season (8-1) when Mo Valley’s Lucas Yarger edged him 4-3 at 126, giving the hosts their lone lead for the night, 9-6.
Three consecutive falls turned the momentum the Tide’s way as Ryder Kuklinskie (9-0) remained undefeated at 132, Nik Fegert upped his record to 6-2 at 138, and Zach Shaffer went above the .500 mark at 4-3 giving the visitors a 24-9 lead with the match now past the halfway point.
Jalen Kurten cut into the Tide lead with a major decision over James Strong (1-8) at 152.
At 160, Jarett Anderson (1-1) got the Tide back on the board with a 7-5 win and Chase Irwin (5-4) also had a narrow 9-6 victory to put the Tide up 30-13.
Nikolaus Smeal gave the Black Knights some hope as his fall over Ethan Seigel (0-3) narrowed the gap to 30-19 with two bouts to go.
215 pounder Alex Shaffer (5-1) dashed the Knights’ comeback bid when he sealed the deal with a first period fall over Lincoln Latosky.
The match score was finalized at 36-22 with David Honan’s 5-2 win over Trenton Guiher (7-2) at 285.
Curwensville will participate in the Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament on the Cmpus of IUP this weekend.
They will return to dual meet action on Tuesday January 11 when they host Mount Union.
