KANE – The Lady Tide of Curwensville fell in their regular season finale to the Lady Wolves of Kane, 9-8 on Friday evening. After falling behind early in the game and tieing the game in the top of the seventh to send it to extras, Kane was able to outlast visiting Curwensville.
After scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at six, Curwensville was able to keep the game tied at six to force extras. With momentum on their side, the Lady Tide scored two runs in the top of the eighth to make it an 8-6 lead. While the game appeared to be all Lady Tide at this point, Kane was able to string together a rally to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to escape with a 9-8 walk-off win.
The win for Kane avenged an earlier season loss to the Lady Tide as Curwensville defeated Kane in the first matchup of 2021 by an 8-0 score. The Lady Tide were able to outhit the Lady Wolves by an 11-10 margin, but seven walks and four errors by Curwensville went a long way in helping Kane come out victorious in this one.
Curwensville fell behind by a five to two score in the bottom of the third as five Lady Wolves crossed the plated to help Kane take their first lead of the game. In the second inning, Curwensville got on the board as Shyanne Rudy singled to start the inning and was able to move up to third on two passed balls. She scored on a two out single from Abby Pentz to make it 1-0.
Curwensville added a second run in the top of the third as Breanna Babcock scored as a courtesy runner as Freyer lashed one of her five hits on the day, a double, to center to being the inning. Babcock was plated when Rudy hit into an error to make it 2-0 Curwensville.
After Kane’s five run bottom of the third, the Lady Tide got one back to chip away at the lead. Freyer came through with another hit, this time a single to scored Logan Sheeder who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning to make it 5-3 in favor of Kane.
The Lady Wolves were able to get the run back in the bottom half of the inning and led 6-3 going into the fifth. The Lady Tide were able to score three runs between the sixth and seventh innings beginning with one in the top of the sixth. Logan Sheeder singled with two outs and was plated on yet another hit by Freyer to make it a 6-4 ball game in the visiting half of the sixth.
Sheeder who came in for relief in the circle was able to hold the Lady Wolves without a run in the sixth as the Lady Tide went in for what could have been their final at-bats of the game.
Needing two runs, the Lady Tide got exactly that as Teagan Harzinski reached on an error and was plated on the RBI tripled from Maddie Butler to make it 6-5. With no outs, the visitors continued the strong inning as Rudy hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Harzinksi and tie the game at 6-6. The Lady Wolves pitcher Madison Stahli was able to work through a tough inning to keep the game tied and give Kane a chance to win in the final half inning.
Though Stahli tried to help her cause as she roped a one out double in the inning, Sheeder worked through the jam and kept the game tied at six to send it to extras.
With one out in the top of the eighth inning, Freyer singled to center with Mackenzie Wall following with a walk. With two on and two out, Harzinski delivered again with a clutch double to score Freyer and move Wall to third to make it a 7-6 lead for the Lady Tide. Butler was able to extend the lead with a sacrifice fly that scored Wall to make it 8-6.
Unfortunately for the Lady Tide, it was not enough run support as Maya Smith came through for her lone hit of the game, a two RBI single that scored Emma Ely and Leah Tigani to win the game, 9-8.
One of the bright spots in the game for the Lady Tide was Freyer’s five-for-five performance in the box while adding two RBI’s and a run scored. She was the lone Lady Tide bater to collect multiple hits in Friday’s showdown.
It was a tough week to end the regular season for Curwensville as the team dropped four straight games entering the District 9 playoffs. The Lady Tide will match up with Moniteau in the first round of the playoffs in a game featuring the Lady Tide as the three seed and Moniteau as the two seed.
At the time of this article, the only other known is the game will take place on Wednesday, May 26th with a time and place to be announced. Curwensville finished the 2021 campaign with a 12-8 overall record.
