CURWENSVILLE — The last time high school baseball of any sort took place was in May 2019. All the preparation that was to happen for 2020 came to a halt at this time a year ago, as the season was taken away due to the pandemic. After nearly two years of waiting, the Curwensville Golden Tide finally got their chance to take to the diamond just outside their high school, welcoming the Johnsonburg Rams for both squads’ long-awaited season opener.
On this day, the return was a successful one for the visitors, as the Rams would capitalize on a four-run third inning to capture a 10-3 victory.
After one inning, the two squads were tied-up at two runs each, but Curwensville managed to get the lead in the second after a sacrifice fly by Spencer Hoover brought in Thad Butler to give the Tide a one-run advantage heading into the third. Unfortunately, that inning did not go well for the home squad.
The four-run inning for Johnsonburg only saw one be earned, as an RBI-double by Domenic Allegretto got the scoring started. But, it was miscues by the Tide that provided the other three runs in the inning. Errors by Tyler Lee and Jake Mullins saw three unearned runs cross the plate. By the time the top of the inning was finally over, Curwensville found itself in a 6-3 deficit that they could not overcome. Johnsonburg added another two runs an inning later, and then another pair of runs in the seventh to close the scoring.
Johnsonburg’s Collin Porter got credited with the win, despite being called to the mound with two outs in the first inning. His three and one-third innings of work were plenty for the victory, giving up only one earned run and striking out five.
Curwensville saw Mullins take the loss, giving up two earned runs in two and one-third innings of work. The Tide would have five players pitch in the contest.
The Tide (0-1) are back in action Wednesday afternoon when they travel to face DuBois Central Catholic.
