IUP Swimming heads to Alabama for 2021 NCAA Division II Championships
INDIANA, Pa. – Five Crimson Hawks are heading South to compete in the 2021 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships this week in Birmingham, Alabama. The championships will take place March 17-20 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Competing IUP swimmers include seniors Claire Mikesell and Iliana Oikonomou, and juniors Paige Mikesell and Rachel Johnson on the women’s side, along with freshman Luke Mikesell for the men.

NOTES
>> Juniors Paige Mikesell and Rachel Johnson are making their third straight appearances at the NCAA Championships. Redshirt senior Claire Mikesell, Paige’s older sister, is making her second career NCAA appearance after redshirting last season.
>> Paige Mikesell heads into the week with the top-ranked time in the 200 butterfly at 1:59.56. She was an All-American in the event last year and ranked third in Division II before the cancellation of the championships. Mikesell is also ranked third in the 100 butterfly (54.45).
>> Paige is a four-time All-American, including the 100 and 200 butterfly and 200 freestyle last year. She also earned All-American honors in the 400 medley relay as a freshman.
>> Johnson was selected to compete in the 100 breaststroke at the 2020 NCAA Championships and earned All-American honors in that event. She joined Paige Mikesell on the All-American 400 medley relay as a freshman in 2019.
>> Johnson is ranked 15th in the 100 breast (1:02.96) and 19th in the 200 breast (2:17.88) heading into the championships.
>> Claire Mikesell is ranked fourth in Division II in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.33) and eighth in the 100 breast (1:02.50). She earned All-American honors in the former in 2019, her first year with the Crimson Hawks.
>> Iliana Oikonomou is ranked 13th in the 50 freestyle (23.47). She’s in her first year with the Crimson Hawks after transferring from the University of Miami, where she has experience at the ACC Championships.
>> Luke Mikesell, the younger brother of Claire and Paige, is ranked third in Division II in the 200 freestyle (1:36.28). He’s also 12th in the 500 freestyle.
