DuBois Man Accused of Using Ex-girlfriend’s Card to Make Over $6K in Unauthorized Charges

DuBOIS – A DuBois man has been accused of using his ex-girlfriend’s debit card and making over $6,000 of transactions that included regular purchases from a beer distributor.

Police say Nicholas William Kohlberg, 40, used the card starting Dec. 24, 2019 about a month after their relationship ended and kept using it until Oct. 21, 2020.

Kohlberg was charged by DuBois City Police with theft by unlawful taking and access device issued to another who did not authorize use, both felonies.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, the victim reported the unauthorized activity to police in November and listed Kohlberg as the person using the account. She stated that she never gave him permission to use her card.

In addition to 95 separate charges for the Brady Street Beer Distributor, there were reportedly 68 charges for the Playstation network, two for Verizon Wireless and one for a wine and spirits store.

In an interview with authorities, Kohlberg allegedly admitted to the theft. He explained that the victim did provide her bank debit card number to him to make a Playstation and small beer purchase.

He reportedly stated she gave him permission to use the card a few times, but he “took advantage of the situation” because he was out of work.

In his statement, he described the crimes as “a series of bad decisions.”

The total amount of the charges is $6,330.34, according to the complaint.

Kohlberg is scheduled for a preliminary hearing during centralized court on March 21.
