Bison Beat Back the Chucks 43-18

Clearfield has four semifinalists

CLEARFIELD — In a dual meet that only saw seven of the 13 weight classes contested, the Clearfield Bison won four of those matches and turned back the Punxsutawney Chucks by a 43-18 score.

The host Bison jumped out to a 9-0 after Justin Hand (3-3) received a forfeit and freshman Will Domico (4-2) had a nice 5-2 win over Chuck Brice Rowan at 138, despite giving up the opening takedown. Domico dominated on top to secure the win.

The visiting Chucks actually took the lead for a short time at 12-9 after picking up back-to-back falls by Ben Skarbeck and Brady Smith at 145 and 152.

A pair of forfeits for the Bison at 160 by Wyatt Reorda (4-2) and at 172 by freshman Carter Chamberlain (1-4) put the Bison back on top for good at 21-12.

Hayden Kovalick (3-1) picked up a second period fall over Joshua Miller at 189 to extend the Bison lead to 27-12.

The feature bout of the night was at 215 where two PIAA state qualifiers matched up. However, Bison Mark McGonigal (5-1) was dominant from start to finish and picked up a 12-0 major decision over Punxsy’s Garrett Eddy.

State placewinner Oliver Billotte (5-1) made short work of the Chucks’ Hunter Harris, pinning him in just 41 seconds. The Bison’s insurmountable lead was 37-12 when the match turned the corner to the lightweights.

At 106, Bison Evan Davis scored the bout’s first five points courtesy a takedown and back points, but Chuck freshman Dysen Gould fought off of his back with a reversal and fall at the 1:41 mark in a stunner.

That turned out to be the last action of the night as neither team could field a 113 or 120 pounder and Nolan Barr remained the only undefeated Bison at 6-0 with his forfeit victory at 126 setting the final score.

The Bison (4-2) don’t have much time to celebrate the win, as they will back on the mats in Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium on Saturday morning, as they host a quad meet. The Bison will first face the Curwensville Golden Tide, followed by matches with DuBois and Montoursville.
