Cartwright Waives Hearing in Assault Case

CLEARFIELD – Last month, an intoxicated Morrisdale man allegedly threatened to shoot people inside a Graham Township residence after they refused to give him truck keys to drive to New York.

Daniel A. Cartwright, 63, was originally charged by Clearfield-based state police with three counts each of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.

On Wednesday, Cartwright waived his right to a preliminary hearing on three counts each of simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. The aggravated assault, terroristic threats and disorderly conduct charges were withdrawn. His bail is set at $50,000 monetary.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, at approximately 4:50 p.m. Dec. 12, troopers responded to the residence where Cartwright reportedly had threatened to shoot people with several loaded firearms.

Upon investigation on-scene, it was found Cartwright came home highly intoxicated and told his wife that he wanted to go to a hunting camp in New York. She refused to give Cartwright his keys due to his level of intoxication.

This upset Cartwright, who reportedly got out a loaded handgun. After his wife took it from him, Cartwright went downstairs and got another firearm from a gun safe. He allegedly waived it around and pointed it at two males inside.

After the second firearm was taken from his possession, state police say he got a third one.  The males then tackled Cartwright to take the firearm from his possession, at which point Cartwright allegedly pulled the trigger.

When this handgun was taken from Cartwright, he got a loaded .22 rifle from the gun safe.  He reportedly yelled that if he didn’t get the truck keys, he’d shoot everyone in the house.

At some point, he walked out to the garage area. When he returned, he kicked the door in and resumed yelling at everyone inside. Shortly after, state police arrived on-scene, and he was taken into custody.
