BROOKVILLE– After having to wait all of December, and part of January, due to restrictions and positive cases within the school, the Clearfield Lady Bison opened their 2021 campaign on Wednesday night. This year’s start came with a road trip to Brookville to face off against the Lady Raiders.
After a slow start, a surge in the second quarter and a strong charge after halftime gave the Lady Bison their first win on the season, 52-46, in a hard-fought contest.
The Lady Bison started the night being challenged on both ends of the court, as the Lady Raiders were able to hold Clearfield to only nine points in the opening stanza. However, the second quarter belonged to the visitors, as the Lady Bison used the ensuing eight minutes to keep Brookville from getting off shots, while also making their own. At halftime, the game was knotted at 21 a piece.
But, Clearfield came out of the halftime break and put on a charge that ultimately would win them the game. Cayleigh Walker and Emma Hipps each accounted for six points, while Paige Rhine and Megan Durandetta helped their teammates with timely baskets to allow the Lady Bison to outscore Brookville 20-8 in the third quarter.
Brookville tried reeling in the game in the final minutes, but the Clearfield defense held on for the victory to start the season on the positive side of the stat line.
Hipps finished the night with a game-high 15 points, while Rhine and Walker added in 13 and 11 points, respectively. Brookville’s Elizabeth Wonderling finished with 15 points, while Kerstyn Davie added in another 10.
Clearfield (1-0) has a day of rest before they are back on the road on Friday as they open Mountain League play against the Lady Rams of Penns Valley. The Lady Rams won both contests a season ago, 55-20 and 69-51.
