CLEARFIELD – Both parents of a six-month-old baby are being charged in an alleged child abuse case.
Andre Maurice Sheffey, 33, and Savannah Grove, 34, both of Clearfield, are being charged in the case by Sgt. Julie Curry of the Lawrence Township police.
According to police information, Sheffey took the baby to Penn Highlands Clearfield Hospital on Oct. 23 because he was “critically ill” and having seizures.
The baby was reportedly blue and cold to the touch. Sheffey told medical staff that his child had fallen off the couch and struck his head, causing the injuries. He was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital.
Upon examination, it was discovered the baby had multiple leg fractures in various stages of healing; a healed upper frenulum injury; a brain bleed and retinal hemorrhages in the right eye.
Doctors concluded the baby’s injuries were not the result of a short fall history but from physical abuse and head trauma. Subsequent investigation revealed the abuse began in August.
Grove reportedly never took the baby for any treatment of multiple injuries, and instead left him as well as three other children in the care of Sheffey.
Additionally, both parents tempered with physical evidence and Grove attempted to intimidate a child witness pertaining to the investigation, police said
Sheffey is charged with five counts each of felony aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children as well as five misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person and related offenses.
Grove is charged with five felony counts of endangering the welfare of children, felony intimidate witness/victim and 10 misdemeanor counts of tampering with evidence.
She’s also been charged with intimidates or intends to intimidate person to give false/misleading information, two counts of obstruction and four counts of recklessly endangering another person, all misdemeanors.
Both Sheffey and Grove are incarcerated in Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
