CLEARFIELD – Some financial relief is coming to more than 40 local businesses that were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In June, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf announced the disbursement of $625 million to 60 Pennsylvania counties through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The county has received $7,157,429 for virus-related expenses through the COVID-19 County Relief Block Grant Program from the state’s Department of Community and Economic Development.

On Sept. 2, Commissioners Tony Scotto, board chairman, John A. Sobel and Dave Glass awarded $664,226.52 to 12 municipalities and on Sept. 22, they disbursed the first small grants to 34 local businesses and 19 non-profits, totaling $793,579.

On Oct. 6, the commissioners awarded relief funding to 56 local businesses, totaling $1,008,527. And on Oct. 13, they awarded a combined $62,622 to five businesses.

In late October, the county announced the availability of a second round of CARES funding for local municipalities, businesses and non-profit organizations and on Tuesday awarded $447,783 to 45 local businesses (see list below).

The county originally capped second-round small business grants at $5,000 for those under $200,000 annual revenue, and at $10,000 for those with revenue above $200,000.

“Because we reviewed our budget, we realized we had more money to give based on the amount of applications and amount of approvals,” Glass said, “so we doubled it.

“Some got $20,000, some got $10,000. The ones that got $5,000 are those under $50,000 [annual revenue] as in the first round.

“We didn’t want anyone who would have been capped at $5,000 in the first round to get more this time. That would be unfair.

“Small businesses with than less $50,000 [annual revenue] got $5,000, then the next level up was $10,000 and then the top was $20,000. Most here met the cap.”

Glass said at next week’s workshop meeting, the commissioners will announce a small number of remaining grant awards to local municipalities, businesses and non-profits.
