CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council on Thursday discussed a proposal to honor local law enforcement and possible repercussions.

Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott explained that a DuBois area resident, Russel Keen, spent his own money to place banners supporting local police in the DuBois area with the logos of the departments.

Keen would like to put similar banners up in the Clearfield area with the logos of the police for the borough, Lawrence Township, state police, sheriff’s office and possibly Curwensville Borough.

He would not be making any money from the project but would ask for some people to pay for prominently displayed banners at $70 each to help cover the cost.

Keen is asking for permission to use the borough police logo.

Stott said she warned him that a similar effort was made a few years ago and the signs were stolen and defaced, but he would still like to continue.

Council discussed the matter with a concern being raised that allowing the banners to be placed could result in a conflict politically.

Council Member Steve Harmic said that supporting the police is always important and that it can be a positive thing if done for the right reason.

When council looked to Solicitor F. Cortez “Chip” Bell he said that the area hasn’t seen any major demonstrations.

However, he is aware that a rally of some sort is planned for Lower Witmer Park, and Stott added for those who hadn’t seen the information, that various officials were invited and that she understands that it is tied to Black Lives Matter.

Bell suggested the matter be tabled until the September meeting while council considers the matter.
