Curwensville Borough Oks Several Items of Business

CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville Borough Council held a short committee meeting Monday and approved several items and also discussed some matters with a borough citizen.

Maggie Swatsworth addressed council regarding work her neighbor is doing. She said he has told neighbors he is building a garage and she is concerned about setback rules.

Council member and Code Enforcement Officer Tom Carfley said he spoke with the person and was told that it is not going to be a garage, only a driveway. Council confirmed that setback rules don’t apply.

She also asked about the alley between their properties and council noted anyone can use it and it cannot be blocked. If it is blocked, they said the police can be contacted.

In regards to an issue she is having with neighbors, council said that as far as they are concerned, it is a civil matter and she needs to contact her attorney. However, if they trespass on her property, she should call police.

In other matters, council approved two recommendations from the planning commission, the Wheeler addition and school stadium renovations.

The National Guard is planning a picnic Aug. 2 and council approved allowing them to have pony rides provided they clean up after the animals.

Council also approved moving a one-way sign on Bailor Drive at the request of BD&D Machine.

The revised Vacant Blighted Abandoned Property ordinance was reviewed and will be sent to the solicitor for review prior to being advertised. The ordinance creates a review board and also a registry of vacant dwellings.

Council also learned that the borough has been paying for workers compensation insurance for the ambulance company needlessly for about 25 years.

The company has been paying its own workers compensation since the mid-1990’s. After a brief discussion, council approved looking into back pay.
