Strolling in the park with a four-legged friend, participating in a yoga class or training for a 5K: everyone uses their free time differently.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on an average day, nearly everyone aged 15 and over (96 percent) engages in some sort of leisure activity. Socializing and communicating, such as visiting with friends or attending or hosting social events, accounted for an average of 39 minutes per day.
And no surprise, people spent about twice as much time socializing on weekend days (58 minutes) as on weekdays (31 minutes). The study found time spent on leisure peaks at age 15 to 19 years (5.60 hours) and then trails off until age 65.
People age 35 to 44 years only enjoy 3.95 hours per day, but then it steadily increases to 4.55 hours (45- to 54-year olds) and 5.42 hours (55- to 64-year olds).
Employed adults living in households with no children under age 18 engaged in leisure and sports activities for 4.5 hours per day, 1.2 hours more than employed adults living with a child under age 6.
