Clearfield Borough Council Hears Updates from Fire, Street Depts.

CLEARFIELD – During the committee meeting for Clearfield Borough Council Thursday, members heard updates from the fire and street departments and reviewed some recommendations.

Fire Chief Justin Worley asks residents to be extremely careful when dealing with incidents involving strange smells coming from buildings, such as the smell of gas or other things. He said they shouldn’t enter buildings without fire personnel present, especially a fire chief.

Worley said that with the increase of methamphetamine labs, there is increased danger of explosions or other harm. Additionally, he said if there is a gas leak somewhere, that too can cause illness or an explosion.

Also, during his report, Worley said they are working on the application for a grant for radios. The grant is a regional one with several other companies involved, and it has a better chance of being approved that way.

Worley said the fire department is also applying for a Penelec grant to change most of the lights in the building to LED, which could save about $1,200 per year.

Under streets, Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott noted that each year the borough is required to purchase 60 percent of their salt contract through the state each winter.

And despite the mild winter, street crew foreman Todd Kling believes they will meet that obligation. With the mild weather, the street crew has been able to do needed maintenance on the buildings.

Some recommendations to be approved at the meeting next week include approving a handicap parking space request on the 400 block of West Locust Street, road closures at the Driving Park on May 30 for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and road closures for the Clearfield County Fair Parade on Aug. 3.

Under the finance committee, council will consider approving Stott applying for a USDA grant to help fund the purchase of new radios for the police department and also to accept sealed bids for replacement of the police department roof.
