WESTOVER – A Friday night trip to Westover to battle the Harmony Lady Owls was all the Lady Tide of Curwensville needed to break a six game losing streak and pick up its first victory of the new year.
Curwensville dumped the Lady Owls on the home team’s floor 52-36 in Moshannon Valley League (MVL) action in a game where the Lady Tide played a complete game.
The Lady Tide are now overall 3-7 on the year with a 2-3 MVL record while the Lady Owls dropped to 1-8 on the season and 0-4 in the Moshannon Valley League.
Lady Tide head coach Bob Desmett said after the game, “We surely needed a win for a confidence booster tonight. We are a little happier tonight than we have been for awhile.”
Curwensville took command of the game right from the beginning thanks to a quick six points from sophomore Alyssa Bakaysa to jump in front 6-2 at the 4:45 point of the opening period.
In all, Bakaysa had nine tallies in the first eight minutes as the Lady Tide took a 17-6 edge into the second period.
Curwensville then won the second stanza 13-7 and at the intermission were now up 30-13.
The Lady Owls didn’t exactly just roll over to start the second half, as balanced team scoring helped them come out in front in the third 14-10 to cut Curwensville’s margin to 40-27 heading into the final eight minutes.
When Lady Owl Marissa Brothers hit a fourth quarter free throw with 5:17 to play, the Owls cut the Lady Tide lead to 30-21.
And that would be the closest Harmony would get in the attempt for a comeback win.
Desmett then added, “I really liked the fact that we had a balanced scoring effort this evening, and the fact that we closed out when we needed was big for us.”
Bakaysa led all scorers on the night with a game high 19 points while teammate Tarah Jacobson added 13.
On offense for Harmony, Tori Hauser dumped in 11 points.
In JV action the Lady Owls won a close one over the Lady Tide 28-24.
The Lady Tide are home on Tuesday to play visiting Elk County Catholic with the junior varsity to tip-off at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
