NEW BETHLEHEM – It was all Redbank Valley in a special Thursday night high school football game as the Bulldogs shut out the Curwensville Golden Tide 39-0 in New Bethlehem.
The Bulldog victory keeps Redbank Valley unbeaten with a perfect 7-0 record for the year while the Tide dropped its fifth straight contest to fall to 1-6.
Curwensville has now been shutout five times this season.
Kobe Bonanno picked up the game’s first score as the big Bulldog fullback rumbled into the end zone with 10:09 to go in the first quarter on a five yard run then with just 17 seconds until the start of the second frame Bonanno took it in again, this time from the one yard line. Both two point conversion attempts failed but Redbank took a 12-0 lead into quarter number two.
Then Redbank Valley showed off its passing game as sophomore quarterback Gunner Mangiantini threw three second quarter touchdown passes.
Ethan Hetrick hauled in a 34 yard strike from Mangiantini at the 11:13 point of the second quarter with Bonanno running in the two point conversion attempt to make it 20-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Then it was brother Sam Hetrick’s turn as the Redbank senior scored on 15 yard TD toss from Mangiantini with just 57 seconds to go before the break. This time the two point conversion try was stopped by the Golden Tide.
Using its timeouts wisely the Bulldogs got the ball back before the intermission, and with just 28 seconds left on the clock Mangiantini once again found Ethan Hetrick. This time it was from 31 yards out, which was followed by another two point conversion attempt that failed. But at the half it was all Bulldogs, leading 32-0.
The game’s final score, also by the Bulldogs, came in the third quarter when back-up quarterback, freshman Cam Wagner, hit Sam Hetrick on a 61 yard touchdown pass on a ball that was tipped by the Tide defense only to fall into the waiting arms of Hetrick. This time Redbank Valley had Derrick Downs kick the extra point to set the final at 39-0.
Curwensville did show more offense this week, but turned the ball over four times on three interceptions and one fumble.
Dalton Bish had two of the three Bulldog interceptions, both coming in the first half.
Curwensville will have its final 2019 home game next Friday against Otto-Eldred with a 7 pm kick-off at Coach Andy Evanko Stadium. In 2018 the Tide defeated the Terrors 48-14 at Otto-Eldred. Curwensville leads the all-time series 8-0.
You can listen to the Curwensville-Otto-Eldred game on WOKW-FM, 102.9, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45 pm.
