Campus Corner: LaBorde Is PAC Rookie of Week Again

BEAVER FALLS — Freshman Abby LaBorde (Clearfield) was named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Rookie Cross Country Runner of the Week for the third time Monday after helping the Geneva Golden Tornadoes set a school-record team time at the Lock Haven University Invitational Saturday morning.

She ran the 6,000-meter West Branch Course in a personal-best 23:20.3 to finish third for the Golden Tornadoes and 53rd among runners from the 37 teams that had five starters.

The meet attracted 404 runners overall, with LaBorde placing 60th.

Geneva, with 289 points, finished ninth behind mostly NCAA Division I and Division II teams. Lebanon Valley was the only Division III team with a better finish, winding up sixth with a 254 score.

The Golden Tornadoes were 50 points better than defending Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion Waynesburg.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

ERIE — Sophomore Madi Jones (Clearfield) turned away two of once-beaten Mount Aloysius’ three shots on goal as Penn State Behrend began its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule by dueling the visitors to a scoreless tie in double overtime Saturday.

A team save was recorded on the Mounties’ other shot in the 110-minute game.

The Lions were 1-4 in non-conference action, with Jones in goal for the victory in her first official start of the season.

INDIANA — Freshman forward/miidfielder Alayna Ryan (Clearfield) made her first start for Indiana University of Pennsylvania and was credited with one of the Crimson Hawks’ 10 shots in a 1-0 overtime win against Gannon Saturday.

She has one assist and five shots, two on goal, for the Crimson Hawks, who are 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and 3-1 overall.

FOOTBALL

INDIANA — Senior linebacker Christian Rumery (Clearfield) made one solo tackle and assisted on two others for Lock Haven in a 77-14 non-conference loss to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in front of 3,892 fans at George Miller Stadium Saturday afternoon.

He has registered six stops, two of them solo, for the 1-2 Bald Eagles.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Freshman cornerback Noah Von Gunden (Curwensville) saw his first action for Grove City in a 52-14 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to host Case Western Reserve Saturday night.

The Wolverines, who saw their seven-game winning streak halted are 2-1 with a 1-1 PAC record.

CO-ED GOLF

APOLLO — Senior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) was medalist for Penn State DuBois with an 84 in the Bernie Gus Classic hosted by Penn State New Kensington at the Links at Spring Church last Tuesday.

He tied for sixth place overall in the tourney that attracted 31 players from seven schools.

The Lions finished fourth among the five full teams with a 363 aggregate score.
