FOXBURG – The first ever road trip to battle Union/ACValley wasn’t a pleasant one for the Curwensville Golden Tide football team Friday night as the Falcon-Knight’s shut out the Tide 24-0 at ACValley’s High School field.
Curwensville fell to 1-2 on the 2019 season while the Falcon-Knight’s slipped one game over .500 at 2-1. Both teams compete in the South Division of the District 9 Small School Conference.
The Tide kicked off to Union/ACValley and immediately shut down the Falcon-Knight’s drive and started its own first drive on its 21 yard line.
It was undoubtedly the best offensive possession of the game for Curwensville who picked up three first downs and moved into the Falcon-Knight’s territory only to have the offense stall.
The first 12 minutes ended with the score 0-0, but Union/AC Valley would own the second quarter, scoring two touchdowns that would be plenty enough to secure the win.
Tony Thompson scored for Union/ACValley with 6:15 to go before the half on a six yard run. The two point conversion attempt by the Falcon-Knight’s fell short.
It should be noted here that Union/ACValley failed on all four two point conversion tries on the night.
With 2:48 before the intermission, the Falcon-Knight’s struck pay dirt once again, this time on a 47 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Bowser to Caden Rainey and at the half it was 12-0 in favor of Union/ACValley.
The Tide offense didn’t fair much better in the second half, but for the Falcon-Knight’s it would add two more scores.
At the 4:57 point of the third quarter Union/ACValley picked up another touchdown on a 5 yard pass from Bowser to Tanner Merwin to make it 18-0 heading into the final quarter.
The game’s final tally came on Bowser’s one yard quarterback sneak to set the final at 24-0.
The Union/ACValley defense came up with two interceptions on the evening.
Up next for the Golden Tide is another road trip on Friday, to Smethport, for a 7 pm kick-off. Last season Smethport defeated Curwensville 20-7.
The Hubbers defeated Port-Allegany Friday night 27-16 and are now 2-1 on the 2019 campaign.
You can listen to the Tide-Hubbers game on WOKW-FM, 102.9, with the pre-game show starting at 6:45 pm.
