Programs Slated for July 26-28 at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – Staff members have announced the slate of programs for July 26-28 at the Parker Dam State Park.

Friday, July 26

Explore Parker Dam—Southwest: 

9 a.m. – outside Park Office 

There are sections of Parker Dam State Park that no trails go.  Come and explore an untrodden section to see what is there.  Bring water, wear proper footwear, and perhaps tick repellant.

DiscoverE: Outdoor Explorers: 

3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Age Requirement: 6-8 years-old 

Join staff as we learn about some of the incredibly interesting animals that inhabit our Earth, and especially Pennsylvania.  Games, crafts, and other activities are a part of this summer-long program series.  Check at the Park Office for more info.

Pennsylvania’s Elk Story: 

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater 

Elk were in PA when European settlers arrived, then they were gone, and now they are here again.  How does a species like elk return to its ancestral range?  Come and learn the details of this incredible story of conservation.

Saturday, July 27

Backpacking Basics: 

4 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

If you have ever thought about camping in the backcountry, there is a lot of great equipment and resources that makes it a much more comfortable endeavor than in times past.  Come learn some basics in equipment selection and preparation that may have you planning your first backpacking adventure.

Timber Rattlesnakes: 

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater 

Snakes often have a bad reputation with folks, Timber rattlesnakes especially.  But is that reputation deserved?  Come learn the truth about these often misunderstood creatures.  You can learn to tell the difference between facts and myths relating to these important reptiles of the wilderness.

Sunday, July 28

Tea and Talk: 

7 p.m. – Beach House steps 

Bring your own cup to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park.  Talk is whatever interests you about the environment.  The Sunday evening tea and talk has been going on for many years—come be a part of the tradition.
