Chiefs Win, Tie in Hillbilly Hardball Classic

PHILIPPI, W.Va. — Hunter Dixon pitched a complete game while hot-hitting Allan Myers and Seth Bumbarger combined to drive in all of the runs as the Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team defeated Garrett County (Md.) 5-3 at Jack Funk Field on the Alderson Broaddus University campus Friday evening.

The Chiefs tied Greenville (Ohio) 7-7 earlier in a game halted after seven innings because of the time-limit rule, and those two teams, at 1-0-1, are in the hunt for the Pizza Hut Hillbilly Hardball Classic’s Orange Division title led by South Charleston (W.Va.) Post 94 at 2-0.

Staked to a 3-0 lead after one inning, Dixon scattered nine hits for his second win in three decisions. He registered six strikeouts and gave up two walks.

The key to Clearfield’s quick start was a triple by Bumbarger that drove in Hayden Williams and Eli Glass, who had back-to-back singles. Myers followed with the first of two doubles.

Myers struck again in the fifth inning after Garrett County Post 214 had closed to within a run.

With Williams and Bumbarger aboard via a walk and a double, respectively, the Chiefs’ catcher came through with a two-run single to cap a perfect six-for-six day that raised his batting average to .824.

Matt Bailor walked and scored the final run on a wild pitch in the sixth frame.

Bumbarger and Williams each had two hits for Clearfield, while Peyton Carr drove in all of Garrett County’s runs with three hits, one a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Clearfield averted defeat in the afternoon game at Robin Harvey Memorial Field in Blue Grass Park in Elkins with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Glass, who led off with a double, stole home when Myers, who drew a walk, headed for second in an attempt to force a balk and got caught in a rundown.

The Chiefs were in front 3-0 after one inning and 5-3 after three but trailed 6-5 in the fourth and 7-6 going to their last at-bats.

Myers socked three doubles, while Dixon had two doubles and three RBIs, Bumbarger had a pair of RBI singles and Williams singled twice and scored two runs.

Jake Sorbera started for the Chiefs and worked 5-2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, six earned. He struck out five batters and walked five.

Williams finished up, striking out the side after surrendering a leadoff single in the top of the seventh.

The Chiefs, 4-1-1 overall, will play a doubleheader at Davis & Elkins College Saturday, facing Moorefield (W.Va.) Post 64 at 3 p.m. and South Charleston at 5:30 in what might be a showdown for the division championship.
