Programs Announced at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – Programs have been announced for the weekend of May 25-26 at the Parker Dam State Park.

Saturday, May 25

Bird Stroll:

9 a.m. – Beach House steps

Just us as we take a leisurely stroll through parts of the park’s Day Use Area in search of our fine feathered friends.  There is an incredible diversity of birds that spend at least part of their time in the park’s varying habitats—learn more about them and tips for identifying birds while afield.

Orienteering Basics:

1 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Learn the basics of this sometimes survival skill, sometimes game.  We’ll cover using a map and a compass, as well as finding your way over the landscape.  With a little practice outside, you’ll also get introduced to a reason to come back to the park.

Natural Symbols of Pennsylvania – Steal the Bacon:

3 p.m. – Beach

Learn the natural symbols for Pennsylvania, including the new PA State Amphibian – just signed into law on April 23, 2019!  Then test your knowledge of the natural symbols through a game of steal-the-bacon.

Parker Dam Jeopardy Game:

8:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

How well do you think that you know Parker Dam State Park and its many natural and historic resources?  Come to the Campground Amphitheater and find out.  This is not just a game, it is an interpretive opportunity.

Sunday, May 26

Hike to the Vista:

3 p.m. – bench near CCC Museum/spillway

Come and hike the Trail of New Giants, including the trail spur to the vista, which overlooks the lake.  Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and bring your camera to capture the view.

Tea and Talk:

7 p.m. – Beach House steps

Bring your own cup to sample some sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park.  Talk is whatever interests you about the environment.  The Sunday evening tea and talk has been going on for many years – come and be a part of the tradition.
