PennDOT highlights more than 87 projects
Nearly 90 projects were highlighted Tuesday as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the work that will take place across District 2’s nine-county region during the 2019 construction season.
“Improving our roads and bridges is vitally important across PA—especially in rural areas. I am very pleased to announce the many improvements that will come to fruition across the region this year,” said Gov. Tom Wolf.
“These improvements will have a real and positive impact on our economy and the lives of our residents.”
Overall highlights in the 2019 construction season for District 2 (Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Juniata, McKean, Mifflin and Potter counties) include:
- approximately 106 miles of paving;
- approximately 39 bridges will be repaired or replaced; and
- approximately 387 miles of roadway will be seal coated.
“Our construction work will bring smoother, safer travel to drivers across the region as well as improving the overall quality of life for our residents,” District 2 Executive Karen Michael said.
“This year we will see over $104 million invested in 62 new road and bridge construction projects, as well as more than $120 million invested in continuing projects like our Route 322 project at Potters Mills.”
Other notable ongoing projects that will continue this year include:
- Atherton Street (Business Route 322) in the State College area featuring roadway, drainage and utility improvements;
- Route 879 bridge preservation of seven bridges in Clearfield County; $4.8 million; work will carry through October 2020;
- Route 120 bridge preservation of two structures in Grugan and Chapman Townships in Clinton County; $2.2 million;
- Route 255 roadway betterment St. Marys to Johnsonburg; $4.4 million;
- Route 35 bridge replacement over Cocolamus Creek in Fayette Township; companion project to 35/A08; bridges are close together; $2.6 million;
- Route 321 full depth reclamation; milling, reconstruction, drainage; $4.3 million; and
- Route 322 resurfacing from Reedsville to Burnham in Brown and Derry Townships in Mifflin County; $7.1 million.
Notable projects that are expected to begin this year include:
- Route 120 slide corrections in Cameron County; $851,000;
- Route 26/I-80 study to consider potential safety improvements through the area of the westbound ramps in Spring, Marion, and Boggs townships; $663,000;
- Route 219 bridge preservation on two bridges over Slab Run near Falls Creek in Clearfield County; $1.7 million;
- Route 120 slide correction work in Grass Flats Run area of Clinton County; $677,000;
- Route 120 retaining wall project on Brusselles Street in the city of St Marys; $515,000;
- Route 333 roadway restoration & concrete rehabilitation in Thompsontown Borough and Delaware Township; $1.8 million;
- Route 346 bridge preservation on structure over Tunungwant Creek (City of Bradford); $2 million;
- Route 22 high friction treatment at various locations in Mifflin County including ramps at the 22/322 Lewistown interchange; $1 million; and
- Route 44 roadway reconstruction to address 13 miles of roadway; $4.5 million.
As construction projects are under way in the region, the traveling public can anticipate seeing many work zones and are urged to keep their safety and the safety of highway workers in mind.
When encountering a work zone, please drive the posted speed limit, turn on your headlights, pay close attention to signs and flaggers and avoid all distractions.
In high traffic locations, motorists are encouraged to use both lanes of travel to the merge point and are to take turns merging into the open lane.
