NEWBURG BOROUGH – Preliminary work to replace a Clearfield County bridge is scheduled to start Tuesday, April 9, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced.
The bridge spans Wilson Run on Route 36 in Newburg Borough. Replacing it will allow PennDOT to remove the structure from Clearfield County’s list of bridges in poor condition.
On Tuesday, crews will perform shoulder widening and drainage installation. This work will take place during daylight hours. Flaggers in the roadway will enforce an alternating traffic pattern.
On Wednesday, April 17, the contractor is scheduled to install temporary traffic signals, which will be in flash mode before becoming fully operational Monday, April 22. These signals will enforce a long-term closure of the southbound lane.
Once the signals are operational, crews will replace the bridge using half-width phasing. At the end of June, a long-term closure of the northbound lane will be implemented as crews begin the second phase. PennDOT will issue an update on the project prior to the start of this phase.
Overall work will include replacement of the bridge, roadway and approach paving, guide rail upgrades, pavement markings and miscellaneous work.
The existing bridge is 34-feet long, was built in 1930 and is traveled by nearly 1,600 vehicles daily. PennDOT expects the new bridge to be open to traffic by the end of September.
Charles J. Merlot Inc. of Mineral Point, Pa., is the contractor for this $1.45 million job.
PennDOT reminds drivers to use caution in and around work zones, obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.
