DUBOIS – The Soul Platter Café – a non-profit, “pay-what-you-can” restaurant – recently held a ribbon-cutting to celebrate its opening in DuBois.
It’s located at 34 W. Scribner Ave., and is open Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning in March. Other open days and times will be “as announced.”
The café offers a healthy menu with both gluten free and vegan meal options but closely follows the “One World Everybody Eats” business model.
According to its Web site, the café is an affiliate member of the OWEE Foundation. It keeps the organization’s spirit and core values by:
- offering pay-what-you-can pricing.
- serving healthy, seasonal food options whenever available.
- giving patrons an opportunity to volunteer in exchange for a meal.
- utilizing volunteers to the maximum extent possible;
- offering a community table.
“The Soul Platter Café is … where all people, regardless of their circumstance, can receive a healthy meal,” the Web site states.
“We are not a soup kitchen but a fully-functioning café serving food with as many local products as possible.
“… Individuals and families will be served with dignity, and will not be turned away if they don’t have any or enough … to pay for their meal.”
According to its Web site, meals are paid by members of the community who are willing to “Pay It Forward” and make a donation when they dine.
“The café will run on hospitality, love and a willingness to get to know our neighbors. We envision [that] … folks from all walks of life will gather around a table.”
