Inmate Population Tops Prison Board Meeting

CLEARFIELD – Inmate population topped discussion at the Clearfield County Prison Board meeting Tuesday.

During his report, Warden Greg Collins said there are currently 177 inmates housed in the Clearfield County Jail. The month of January began with 162 with 154 committed and 142 released. January ended with 179 and the average daily population was 174.

Additionally, 10 inmates are being housed at Jefferson County and one inmate is housed in Centre County at the request of District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. Twenty-six inmates are on home detention.

President Judge Fredric J. Ammerman, board chairman, asked Collins if he knew how many of those housed at CCJ were pre-trial detainees.

Collins did not have that information at hand but said he would e-mail the board members with the number and have that information at subsequent meetings.

He did say that none of the inmates housed out-of-county are pre-trial inmates.

Collins also noted, when asked about some of the medical care charges, that a couple of the female inmates are pregnant and those charges are for pre-natal care.

Due to the large population at the jail, the corrections officers have been working many overtime hours. The jail is required to have a certain ratio of corrections officers to inmates.

Collins has stated in past meetings that overtime is cheaper than sending inmates to other facilities, such as Jefferson County.

The board held an executive session for personnel at the end of the meeting with no action taken.
