CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Bison boys basketball squad opened the 2018-19 season at home against the Golden Tide of Curwensville and came up with a convincing 77-32 victory Friday night.

The Tide actually took a 2-0 lead before any time had expired off of the clock thanks to two technical fouls being assessed to the Bison in its pre-game warm-ups for dunking and hanging on the rim.

After freshman Ty Terry hit both technical free throws the Bison went on a 21-0 run to make a statement of dominance.

Cade Walker, a junior, poured in 17 first quarter points as the Bison left no doubt as to who was in command after the first period up 30-6.

The Bison got balanced scoring in the second frame to take a halftime led of 49-18.

Clearfield head coach Nate Glunt said afterwards, “We really did well in getting good shots tonight that made them(Curwensville) struggle some on defense.”

For Matt Wassil, Tide head coach, it was simple, saying without reservation, “We need to play better, period. We need to take care of the ball because we had too many turnovers to compete tonight. All those turnovers put the game out of reach for us early on.”

The Bison offense slowed down over the final 16 minutes, but still managed to outscore the Tide 28-14 to get the 45 point win.

Walker led all scorers on the night with 28 points, while Karson Rumsky with 16 and Keagan Hess with 10 chipped in to help the Clearfield offense.

Christian Bakaysa had eight tallies for the Golden Tide with Terry and Trevor Lansberry each scoring seven.

Glunt made it clear though, that much more work needs to be done for his team, commenting “ We just need to get back to work and work hard . I will watch the film and find things to correct because we play a good West Branch team Monday and need to be ready.”

For Wassil, he put it plain and simple, saying, “Just have to play better. If we make mistakes that’s okay as long as they are aggressive mistakes, and tonight that wasn’t the case.”

In the junior varsity game Clearfield also came out on top, defeating the Golden Tide by a score of 63-24.

The Tide will be on the road again Monday with a game at Moshannon Valley while the Bison take on West Branch at home. The junior varsity games start at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
