HARRISBURG – Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman (R-34) joined the Piazza family at a ceremony in Harrisburg, as Gov. Tom Wolf signed the Timothy J. Piazza Antihazing measure into law.
“Thank you, Governor for joining us in supporting this comprehensive rewrite of the state’s hazing rules by signing it into law,” said Corman.
“The Timothy J. Piazza Law emphasizes prevention, enforcement and transparency in order to end hazing in Pennsylvania.”
Act 80 of 2018 provides tools for prosecutors, parents, students and schools to see where the problems are and punish those who irresponsibly put people in harm’s way.
The Timothy J. Piazza Antihazing Law (Senate Bill 1090) was introduced by Corman in March as a comprehensive plan to strengthen antihazing laws nationwide by emphasizing prevention, enforcement and transparency.

“I commend the Piazza family for their strength and courage in the face of unspeakable tragedy,” Corman said.
“Their tireless efforts have made these significant reforms a reality here in Pennsylvania that will save lives. This law will be a model for changing antihazing laws throughout the nation with the Piazzas’ efforts leading the way.”
The bill increases penalties for those involved in hazing; requires schools to have policies and reporting procedures in place to stop hazing; and ensures that parents and students are provided with information related to the issue.
It also establishes clear-cut parameters on hazing for organizations such as fraternities and sororities while creating safe harbor provisions so students know they can call for help for someone in distress without fear of prosecution.
