The extension of the Beech Creek Railroad, operated by the New York Central, from Kerrmoor to Mahaffey was completed in 1893.
The road ran by way of the Susquehanna River and Bells Landing. There were two tunnels on the line, both double-tracked. The tunnels were Friendship Tunnel in Ferguson Township and Hoyt’s Tunnel in Greenwood Township.
Pictured is the Hoyt Tunnel, which opened in January of 1893. The railroad operation discontinued in November of 1937. The picture is dated in 2006.
