Campus Corner: Herrington Cited by NEWMAC; Maines Makes 10 Tackles; Orsich Posts 77; Jones Earns Shutout

TROY, N.Y. — Senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) was named the first New England Women’s and Men’s Conference Special Teams Athlete of the Week of the season early last week for his 10-point effort in Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s opener and then booted two extra points in the Engineers’ 25-14 Transit Trophy Game loss to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the East Campus Stadium Saturday.

WPI (1-1) outgained RPI in total yardage, 330-183, but paid for four interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, as RPI sent the majority of the 1,533 fans home happy following its second win.

Herrington was off target on a 36-yard field goal attempt that would have made it a one-possession game with 6:35 remaining.

He punted six times for a 32.5 average, with a long of 43 yards.

Herrington, who has been named NEWMAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week five times, has scored 12 points on nine PATs and one FG while averaging 33.3 yards for seven punts.

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Senior strongside linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) was one of Thiel’s defensive standouts again Saturday in a 55-0 loss to Washington & Jefferson, which was ranked No. 15 by d3football.com.

The Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener drew 1,924 fans to Cameron Stadium, and Maines registered double-figure stops for the second week in a row.

He registered seven solo tackles and was involved in three other stops.

In addition, Maines forced a fumble for the 0-2 Tomcats.

CHESTER, Pa. — Senior starting center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and junior reserve offensive lineman Nate Lash (Clearfield) helped pave the way for a pair of 100-yard rushers as Lycoming picked up some momentum for the Middle Atlantic Conference schedule with a 33-19 win over Widener at Jamie C. Quick Jr. Stadium Saturday.

More than 2,300 fans saw the visiting Warriors balance their record at 1-1.

Lash was making his first appearance on offense after playing defense last season.

MEN’S GOLF

STATE COLLEGE — Junior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) carded a career-low 77, three strokes better than his previous best score, to lead Penn State DuBois to second place in the first Pennsylvania University Athletic Conference Tournament of the season at the Penn State White Course Saturday.

Freshman Alec Graham (Clearfield) checked in with an 82 to help the Lions finish three strokes behind Penn State Wilkes-Barre with a four-player aggregate of 320.

Orsich tied for fifth overall and Graham placed 15th among the 62 players from 10 teams.

Medalist honors went to Austin Green of Mont Alto with a two-under-par 68.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

MADISON, N.J. — Freshman goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) recorded her second shutout as Penn State Behrend split two games for the second consecutive weekend in the Drew Fall Festival at Ranger Stadium.

Jones turned away four shots by Bard (N.Y.) in a 3-0 victory Friday and had three saves in a 2-0 title game loss to Coast Guard Academy Saturday.

Senior midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) made her season debut for the Lions against Bard.

Jones has 10 saves in her first four starts in goal.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

EDINBORO — Freshman Alex Coval (Clearfield) ran Edinboro’s 8,000-meter course in 34 minutes in his first meet for Seton Hill Saturday morning.

The Griffins, with a 130 aggregate for their top five finishers, placed fifth among the six Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams at the Doug Watts Open.

Edinboro, ranked 24th in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Preseason Poll, claimed the championship with 23 points. No. 10-ranked Shippensburg finished second with 44.
