Campus Corner: Maines Registers Team-High 11 Tackles; Herrington Perfect on Eight Kicks; Jones Starting in Goal

ALFRED, N.Y. — Senior outside linebacker Dusty Maines (Clearfield) made the most of his second career start for Thiel with a team-high 11 tackles in the Tomcats’ 44-16 non-conference loss to Alfred with a crowd of 4,327 watching the season opener in Yunevich Stadium.

Ten of the 5-9, 195-pounder’s tackles were solo stops, and one was for a one-yard loss that he shared with two teammates.

Maines played in 20 games his first three seasons with the Tomcats and recorded 26 tackles, including three for losses of 11 yards.

PAXTON, Mass. — Senior kicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute offense got off to a fast start to the 2018 season with a 54-0 non-conference victory over host Anna Maria in front of 1,132 fans at AMCAT Field Friday night.

Herrington converted seven extra point tries and booted a 19-yard field goal for 10 points, the third double-figure performance of his career.

He also had a 38-yard punt.

In 12 games last year, the 5-11, 185-pounder was true on all 44 of his PATs and was 10-for-12 in the field goal department to total 74 points.

Those numbers and a 34-yard average for 54 punts earned Herrington New England Women and Men’s Athletic Conference Special Teams Athlete of the Year and D3football.com All-East First Team laurels.

He also was named to the NEWMAC First Team and the Worcester Area Football Association’s 27th annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Second Team.

Herrington averaged 32.3 yards for six punts as a freshman and converted one PAT as a sophomore.

WILLIAMSPORT — Two-time All-Middle Atlantic conference center Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) and the Lycoming offense found it rough going against a tough Susquehanna defense at David Person Field Saturday as the Warriors lost the Stagg Hat Trophy Game 38-7.

The 2,437 fans saw the Warriors held to 205 yards of total offense in their opener.

Stubbs, All-MAC second team as a sophomore and All-MAC first team last fall, made his 21st consecutive start as the anchor of the offense after making five starts in seven games at tackle in his first season as a Warrior after transferring from Bloomsburg.

Junior guard Nate Lash (Clearfield) has been moved to the offense after being a defensive lineman his first two seasons.

The 6-2, 250-pounder appeared in two games with one solo tackle last year.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

ERIE — Freshman goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) was between the pipes as Penn State Behrend opened the season by splitting two games in the annual Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament at the PSB Soccer Complex.

The Lions’ defense made it easy for her to register a shutout in the 2-0 win over Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) Friday by preventing any shots on goal.

Jones faced five shots and turned away three Sunday when Oberlin (Ohio) claimed the tourney title with a 2-0 victory.

Senior Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) is a midfielder for the Lions.

She scored one goal in each of the last three seasons and has totaled nine points with 11 of her 28 shots on goal in 39 games.
