Plans are currently under way for the seventh annual Black Moshannon Monster Hunt Race. The event is an “adventure scavenger race” that’s being held Oct. 6 at the Black Moshannon State Park.
According to organizers, participants will visit a station, complete an activity and obtain a clue. Afterwards, they will move to the next station.
The race course will not be revealed in advance, however. Participants must figure out which trail to take from the clues. Each station will include a Halloween theme to help with the clues.
Participants will also get wet and muddy. Awards will be given to the first- and second-place winners in the 5K run. There is also an award for best costume of the day and group costume.
5K Run/Hike
This is a 5K course that includes some roadways but mostly trails. Participants will have a kayak or archery activity (equipment will be provided).
An obstacle course with a mud pit will need to be overcome before ending the race at the slip and slide.
Early registration is $20. T-shirts are guaranteed if participants are signed up by Sept. 10. Race Day check-in will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the beach area. The race begins at 1 p.m.
A bake/craft sale will be held from 12 p.m. until the race finishes at the Environmental Learning Center area.
The Black Moshannon Monster Hunt Race is held in memory of Mike McCloskey, who was a dedicated park volunteer and outdoorsman.
He lost a long, hard-fought battle to chronic lymphocytic leukemia in January of 2013 at the age of 41 years. This year’s race proceeds will be donated to a local family in need due to a medical condition.
The proceeds will benefit Eva Butterworth, a 3-year-old diagnosed with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). She has had many brain surgeries and is on a feeding tube.
