911 Text Messaging System in Testing Phase

CLEARFIELD – Testing for a new text message system is continuing within the Clearfield County Emergency Services Department.

At Tuesday’s Clearfield County Commissioners’ work session, Director Joe Bigar said the county had successful testing of the text message system with Verizon and they are continuing testing with other cellular service providers.

Bigar said traditional calls to 911 for emergencies will always be preferred, the text message system adds another layer of safety for residents. Bigar said the text message system is good for the hearing impaired, it’s also good for emergencies in areas where cell service is limited.

“There are times where people may not be able to make an actual phone call, but they have enough signal to get a text message out,” Bigar said. He said his department will have more information for the residents as it becomes available.
