CLEARFIELD – Due to no quorum, Thursday’s Clearfield County Prison Board meeting was short. However, those present did briefly review some items though no vote could be taken.
Those present included Commissioners Tony Scotto and John Sobel, who is also the vice chairman, and Deputy Warden Jim Mitchley. Mitchley does not have voting power but was able to give the board the warden’s report and also answer some questions.
Warden Gregory Collins arrived later, but four voting members are needed for a quorum. Sobel explained that by the time they realized they would not have enough for a quorum, there was no time to legally cancel the meeting.
The warden’s report noted that the month of May began with 160 inmates with 160 committed and 159 released. The month ended with 154 inmates.
Mitchley said there are currently 161 in Clearfield County Jail, 17 housed in Jefferson County and three elsewhere bringing the total to 181.
Work release began with three with two added and two released, ending the month with three.
Housing inmates outside of CCJ is one of the reasons the jail is over budget for contracted services only half way through the year. And overtime hours are coming close to the budget.
Mitchley said they are working to hire new corrections officers but not everyone they interview is qualified for the job.
Mitchley also reported there was one extraordinary incident between two inmates resulting in one being taken to the hospital with a shattered eye socket.
The board members also reviewed a notice of resignation from part-time CO Isaac Sanker and the hiring of three part-time COs: Gabriel Ponist, Roger Moore and Nova Dale.
