HOUTZDALE – State Correctional Institution at Houtzdale Superintendent Barry Smith has reported the death of inmate, Shane Savage.
According to GANT News partner WJAC-TV, Savage, 32, was found unresponsive in his cell just before 9 p.m. Sunday.
Officers and medical staff responded and started performing CPR on Savage. An ambulance was requested and arrived at the facility. Savage, however, was pronounced dead at 9:50 p.m. at UPMC Altoona Hospital.
Clearfield-based state police will conduct a death investigation. The Clearfield County Coroner will determine the cause of death.
Savage was serving a five to 10-year sentence for an armed robbery in Lackawanna County, effective January of 2012. He’d been housed at SCI Houtzdale since June 10, 2014.
