Cline Records 100th Hit in Lady Bison’s 4-3 Victory

Four year letterwinner Brooke Cline picked up her 100th hit against Huntingdon

HUNTINGDON — Senior shortstop Brooke Cline joined the Clearfield Area High School softball team’s 100-Hit Club with a single in the first inning and was on the scoring end of a double steal for the winning run in the fifth, and Erica Hanes snuffed out a Huntingdon threat with three strikeouts in the seventh as the Lady Bison eked out a 4-3 victory Thursday afternoon.

Leadoff batter Karly Rumsky enjoyed a perfect game at the plate with a double and three singles to pace an 11-hit attack, while Cline finished with three singles after becoming the first Lady Bison with triple-figure hits since Rachel Hoffman ended her four-year career in 2014 with 106.

Makayla Ross delivered a key hit with a two-out single that scored Rumsky and Cline to give Clearfield (6-8) a 3-2 lead in the third inning of the Mountain League game. Rumsky had singled home Lindsay Hand, who ignited the rally with a double.

Huntingdon (5-12) immediately made it a tie game on two walks and a passed ball.

Cline’s third hit and a Lady Bearcat misplay on Ross’ grounder set up the double steal that made Abby Fedder the winning pitcher.

She allowed only five hits, two in the first inning when the Lady Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Leah Reed and an RBI single by Riley Confer.

Fedder wiggled out of a two-on, one-out jam in the fifth by inducing an infield pop-up and a grounder, both to third baseman Kirstin Norman.

The senior right-hander, who struck out three and walked three, was relieved by Hanes after Amanda Norris singled to begin the bottom of the seventh frame.

Huntingdon also had the potential winning run aboard via Clearfield’s lone error, but Hanes was up to the task and retired the Lady Bearcats’ top three batters on swinging strikes for her first career save.

The Lady Bison will journey to Spring Mills Monday to play Penns Valley and then host Brookville Tuesday in a non-league game that was added to the original schedule when Glendale cancelled last week’s make-up game because of league commitments.
