That score, coupled with his 150 for the two rounds of the PAC Fall Championship at Avalon at Squaw Creek in Vienna, Ohio, in October, enabled Thorp to emerge from a six-way tie and finish three strokes ahead of Washington & Jefferson’s Jake Darr, who was medalist for the day with 73 for a 54-hole total of 227.
The first Tomcat to win the individual crown and MVP award since 2000, Thorp also earned All-PAC First Team honors for the second time. He made the first team as a sophomore by placing fourth.
Thiel placed sixth with a 1019 aggregate for the three rounds. W&J reigned with a 926.
Thorp turned in the low score for the Tomcats in all but one of their 13 events during the fall and spring seasons and won or shared top honors in four of them.
Earlier last week, he was named the PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Month for March.
Each month, SAACs at PAC member institutions are asked to nominate one male and one female student-athlete to be considered for the honor based on academic and athletic accomplishments. Nominees must be a senior or junior varsity athlete with a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher and be actively involved within their campus communities.
Thorp won the Carnegie Mellon Spring Invitational and placed second in a dual meet against La Roche at Sanford, N.C., during March.
Off the course, he participates in Greenville’s Junior Chamber of Commerce and is a student employee of Thiel’s Department of Athletics.
The business administration major participated in numerous volunteer projects at Riverside Park in Greenville.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
LORETTO — St. Francis (Pa.) University junior Sarah Lash (Clearfield) placed second in the javelin at the Red Flash Open with a throw of 36.07 meters (118 feet, 4 inches) to earn pints for the hosts at DeGol Field Saturday.
Lash wound up seventh in the hammer throw with a personal-record heave of 35.18 meters (115 feet, 5 inches).

ASHLAND, Ohio — Slippery Rock freshman Ethan McGinnis (Clearfield) triple jumped 12.53 meters (41 feet, 1½ inches) to place fifth at the Ashland Alumni Open Saturday.

BASEBALL
DUBOIS — Freshman outfielder Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) was hitless in four at-bats in two of Penn State DuBois’ non-conference three games last week.
The Lions lost 18-8 to Point Park and were swept by Clarion, 4-3 and 3-2, to finish the regular season 24-10.
They won the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference West Division title for the third year in a row with a 14-1 record and will host the double-elimination portion of the playoffs at Showers Field Sunday and Monday.
The PSUAC Championships got under way Friday with the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds of each division squaring off in single-elimination games.
Advancing were third seed Penn State Beaver over Penn State Greater Allegheny 7-3 in the West Division and second seed Penn State Wilkes-Barre over Penn State Schuylkill 6-5 in the East Division.
The division champs received byes into Sunday action with West champion Penn State DuBois taking on Penn State Wilkes-Barre (11-5-1) at 10 a.m. and East titlist Penn State Brandywine (18-16) going against Penn State Beaver at 12:30 p.m.
The losers will meet in Game 5 at 3 and the winners will tangle in Game 6 at 5:30.
Monday’s schedule pits the Game 5 winner against the Game 6 loser at 11 a.m., with the survivor moving into the title game against the Game 6 winner at 1:30 p.m. If another game is needed to determine the champ, it will start at 3:30.
