Four Golden Tide Cagers Hit Double Figures in 69-44 Win

SHEFFIELD — The Curwensville Area High School boys basketball team shot Sheffield out of its zone defense in the first quarter and exploited the Wolverines’ man defense in the second half for a 69-44 Allegheny Mountain League win Friday night.

The Golden Tide had four players score in double figures for the second game in a row to climb above .500 for the fourth time at 10-9 and finish with a 4-6 AML South Division record.

Josh Terry led the way once again with 25 points, while Devan Barrett had 15, Christian Bakaysa 13 and Avery Francisco 12.

Terry hit a trio of three-pointers and Barrett added another as the Golden Tide jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the first quarter.

“Josh and Devan really shot the ball right off the bat and took them out of their game plan,” Curwensville coach Matt Wassil said. “We took them out of their comfort zone. I think they would have like to play that 2-3 zone the whole game if they could.

“They went man, and I think we are better against a man defense with our athleticism.”

The Golden Tide fell off to 11 points in the second period but still were in front 30-21 at the half.

“We left a lot of points out there in the first half, but our defense picked up in the second half,” Wassil said. “We started to shut down drives and force turnovers, getting us into transition and getting us some easy buckets.”

Those keyed a 39-23 advantage over the last 16 minutes.

An impressive stat for the Golden Tide was their 23-for-29 showing at the foul line.

“What a difference when you actually make free throws,” Wassil said.

Matt Dunham and Tyler Hepinger each had 11 points for the Wolverines, who saw their losing streak extended to 10 for a 1-18 record. They are 0-8 in the AML North Division.

The Golden Tide will step out of league play to host Clearfield Monday in the rematch of their season opener that the Bison won 54-52.

Sheffield won the junior varsity game 38-33.
