Golden Tide Trio Go Unbeaten at Juniata Valley Tourney

ALEXANDRIA — Three Curwensville Area High School wrestlers went undefeated in the second annual Garrett Scott Memorial Invitational Tournament at Juniata Valley High School Saturday.

Senior heavyweight Steven McClure upped his record to 22-2 with two pins, a major decision and two close regular decisions, one in overtime.

Sophomore Zach Holland (14-3) breezed through the 132-pound bracket with four falls, all in the second period..

Junior Blake Passarelli (21-4) had only three bouts at 120 and ended all of them with first-period pins.

Holland and Passarelli won titles at 106 and 113, respectively, last year, but there were no first-place matches for individual titles Saturday due to time constraints.

Three more Golden Tide underclassmen were .500 or better.

Sophomore Cole Bressler (11-11) was 3-1 with three falls at 160, sophomore Adam Straw (11-8) was 3-2 with three pins at 145 and freshman Jake McCracken (15-10) was 2-2 with two pins at 152.

Sophomore 182-pounder Gage Roos earned his first career win with a fall.

Coach Dean Swatsworth was very pleased with the Golden Tide’s overall performance but disappointed that, due to time constraints, all seven did not get the five matches that were guaranteed when the tourney was added to the schedule after wintry weather prevented the team from going to the Bo Wood Tournament at Indiana Jan. 6.

Despite having 12 teams represented, the tourney had only six brackets with six or more wrestlers, with three (145, 152, 160) broken down into two groups.

Jersey Shore edged out Curwensville for the team championship.

The Golden Tide (3-10) will close out the regular season with three dual meets, the first at Moshannon Valley Friday.
